Trump’s Recent Action is a “Direct Assault”; Canada Will React: Prime Minister Mark Carney

Canada-US Relations: “This constitutes a blatant assault” on Canada. “We will protect our workers, safeguard our businesses, and defend our nation,” stated Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Ottawa: Prime Minister Mark Carney stated on Wednesday that US President Donald Trump’s recent action is a “direct assault” on Canada. Mr. Carney was commenting on the new tariffs introduced by President Trump, which he declared to be a “permanent” measure.

Donald Trump imposed a hefty 25% tariff on all auto imports, including spare and auxiliary parts, earlier in the day. When President Trump announced the tariff, he stated, “This tariff shall remain permanent.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded to this almost immediately, stating, “This is a very direct attack” on Canada. “We will defend our workers, we will defend our companies, and we will defend our country.” However, he made no announcements about retaliation.

“We need to see the details of Donald Trump’s executive order before responding to them,” he stated. In response to this “unjustified” action by President Trump, Prime Minister Carney also made the decision to end his election campaign early in order to return to Ottawa right away and convene a special meeting with the Cabinet committee on US relations.

A $2 billion (Canadian dollar) “strategic response fund” has already been declared by Prime Minister Carney to safeguard Canadians who work in the car industry, which will be negatively impacted by Trump’s decision. His words, “Canada will protect its auto workers,” reassured hundreds of thousands of individuals already facing uncertainty.

In terms of exports, the automotive sector is the second-largest in Canada. Over 125,000 Canadians are directly employed by it, and over 500,000 more work in related businesses.

Trump’s Recent Action

Prime Minister Carney intensified his criticism of President Trump by claiming that the president has thrown the US into a world trade war. He claimed that Americans are suffering greatly as a result of Trump’s policies. “American workers and consumers are suffering from his trade war, and the harm will only become worse. According to Mr. Carney, “I see that American consumer confidence is at a multi-year low.”

The Conference Board said on Tuesday that the US consumer confidence index dropped 7.2 points to 92.9 in March, marking the fourth consecutive month-to-month dip and the lowest level since January 2021. With President Trump’s recent 25% tax increase on auto imports, which goes into effect in April, US automakers will have to pay more, which could lead to less sales.

In addition to imposing 25% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, Donald Trump has threatened to impose sweeping taxes on all Canadian goods imported into the US beginning on April 2.

Carney remarked, “He wants to break us so America can own us,” Prime Minister Carney declared, “And that will never ever happen,” adding that the U.S.-Canada relationship had evolved. We didn’t alter it.

Auto plants on both sides of the border will close at the same time if the tariffs are implemented, according to Ontario Premier Doug Ford, whose province is home to the majority of Canada’s auto industry.

“The president has declared it to be Liberation Day. For American workers, I refer to it as Termination Day. President Trump enjoys telling individuals, “You’re fired!” Mr. Ford remarked, “I didn’t think he meant US auto workers when he said that.”

The decision by Donald Trump to annex Canada and turn it into the “51st State of the United States of America” has angered Canadians everywhere. He has been using the term “Governor” to refer to the prime minister of Canada. The world assumed it was a joke when he first did that with then-prime minister Justin Trudeau. But for “national security” considerations, that has now emerged as a major goal of US foreign policy.
